Wiki’s Development Series
In conjunction with series partners, Flow Kayaks and River Ninja Rentals, we are super excited to announce season 2 of a weekly kayak series held on the Avon River in Otautahi. As you may have noticed already the series is now called Wiki’s Development Series. We feel this change better reflects what the series is all about, developing skills, developing experience, developing fitness, and developing a fund that can support the future of our sport and give junior paddlers opportunities they may not have otherwise received.
Your Feedback Helped, Thank You!
Thanks to the feedback received after the last series, we have moved the series to the beginning of October through until Christmas. We believe this move will benefit both the flat water and multisport community by fitting the series into their training cycle, ultimately focusing it back to one of our purposes of helping you all develop towards your end goals and become better paddlers.
The Changes
All good things come in threes, so along with the name and date change, we have made a course change. It was unfortunate last season that there were a few incidents with rowers that impacted our paddlers, so to remove the chance of these occurring, the course has shifted to upstream of Arawa Canoe Club. The new course is a 1.6km loop with great visibility of the racing for spectators and the race directing team. Distance kayaking isn’t always the most spectator friendly so we hope this course will help bring a great atmosphere to the banks of the Avon.
Opportunity To Win Every Week
Thanks to the Flow Kayaks team, you will be in the draw every week to win a $100 voucher. With services from repairs and parts, through to brand-new boats, this is one prize you don’t want to miss out on and there will be 12 opportunities to win!
Adding To The Experience
The team from Flow Kayaks are going to be at each race with some shiny toys on display for you to admire. Rumour on the street is they have a new boat releasing soon… come along to be one of the first to get your hands on it! Flow will also have some snacks/refreshments on hand for a gold coin donation, all proceeds will be going into the junior development fund.
Logistic Hassles No More!
Thanks to River Ninja Rental, for a koha of your choice there will be a range of boats and equipment available so anyone can participate! This koha will go into the junior development fund so if you are one of those paddlers who may struggle to paddle on weeknights before it gets dark due to the logistics of grabbing your boat from home, or perhaps have travelled down to Christchurch for a business trip or guided trip over the Coast to Coast course, come on down, we are making it easy for all to participate! Bookings are essential
Entry Fees & Records
While there is change for this season, we are still dedicated to keeping the heart of what made this series successful last year. Entry fees are still $5 per race with Juniors racing for free. Course records are still being recorded for those chasing bragging rights. And for those new to the sport, a wealth of paddling experience will be available to help provide any advice or answer those “silly” questions you’ve always wanted to ask.
We look forward to seeing you all every Wednesday evening!

Who is Wiki?
Jordan “Wiki” Pearson has been a large part of the kayaking community in Christchurch for the past 13 years. While he is more well known now for the time spent organising events, providing medical and safety support at a variety of events including the Classic River Race and Coast to Coast, as well as involvement on the committees of the Arawa Canoe Club and the Down River Canoe Club, Wikis roots in kayaking started as a competitor and instructor with Topsport Kayaking.
It was here where the nickname Wiki snuck in as he was always full of facts that he happily shared with clients and training partners. A “know it all” as it was lovingly put, however as Jordan will say, Wiki translates to quick in Hawaiian, and with some results in the past including National Multisport Champ and a Sub 4 hour win at the Classic River Race, he’s certainly had some quick moments over the years.
Wiki was fortunate to receive a lot of support as a Junior and firmly believes it was this support that helped develop the skills and passion to make kayaking an important part of his life. Wiki has created the development series so the next generation of paddlers can be supported through their growth in the sport.
